In fact, Playfair acts as a transitionary design. Since the period of enlightenment toward the latter part of eighteenth century, the broad nib quills were replaced by pointed steel pens. This led to typing letters to develop more and more abstraction from the written letters. Advancements in the area of print hardware and technology for ink and paper enabled print of high contrast letterforms and finely drawn thin lines.
This design suits this period if it is not the revival of any type of design though it is introduced from the design of the printer and typeface designer John Baskerville, William Martin’s typeface for the ‘Boydell Shakspeare’ (sic) edition as well as the ‘Scotch Roman’ designs that came after it.
