Marriott was founded by American businessmen Frank Kimball and John Willard Marriott in 1927 when they purchased and renamed a grocery stall called Hot Shoppe for grocery sales. Within one year they expanded by adding catering operations; later on this venture shifted into hotel industry in 1957 before transitioning into hotel chain in 1970 when its name changed to Marriott Corporation.
