The Arial® Nova family returns Arial to its basics. Some changes in character spacing have been performed, and several minor changes have been done to the design in order to restore the shapes and proportions of the typeface to achieve the vision of original 1982 type design created for IBM’s new high-speed laser printers. Since these original Arial fonts were low resolution bitmap designs, dubbed ‘Sonora Sans” by IBM, there was still evidence that the design could also be a significant high resolution digital typeface and Arial was redrawn for the Monotype imagesetter in late 1980s. In this process Arial gradually developed during its growth losing some of its characteristics of the initial design.
