Univers sans serif font designed by Adrian Frutiger on the Swiss principles for Charles Peignot at Deberny & Peignot. Again, contrary to many typefaces, Frutiger imposed a discipline at all levels throughout the series, light and dark, extra condensed and extended, a consistency in design which was all possible in the foundry type and photocomposition fonts. Any version in a word may be mixed with any other version.
Opponents have argued that the design for the most utilized central series is restricted by adherence to little used borders. If Helvetica offers the strongest central designs at the cost of somewhat compromised standardization across the series, Univers achieves the goal of standardized series by restraining the central designs.
